Best Way to Paint Over Ceiling Water Stains

After a heavy rainstorm, it's common for a home to have water stains on the ceilings. So, can you paint over ceiling water stains? Absolutely! However, there are a couple of things you have to do before the water stains are able to be painted over.

Before Painting Over Water Stains
You must have the spot where the water got in fixed. If it is not fixed, water will continue to come in, and you will have to paint that area again, and again, and again. Until the leak is repaired, you can't paint over the water stain.

If the water stains are on your ceiling, then the most common culprit is a leaky roof. Hire a roofing contractor to resolve this problem.

If the water stains are close to a door or window, it is quite likely due to damaged wood or faded caulking. A painting services company can examine and address this for you.

You have to be sure the space is completely dry. If the drywall or plaster isn't dry, the paint job won't be successful. You can begin by drying up puddles of water with towels, but it's also an excellent idea to turn on your dehumidifier.

If the area has any mold, then you must kill it. This is best done professionally since plenty of the sprays you use to kill mold are poisonous and can be hazardous if not handled cautiously. Also, if the mold is bad, you might need to replace that section of plaster or drywall. Mold isn't anything to play around with.

The last step is to prime the area using a stain-blocking primer. If you don't do this, you will be able to see the stain through the paint.

Now Paint Over Your Water Stains
Paint the affected area using a top-quality paint product. You will most likely need to paint your entire ceiling since it's quite hard to paint just a spot and have it blend well with the rest.

If this sounds like a lot of work, the truth is it is. If you hire a professional painter to manage any mold or leaks, it won't be hard for an experienced do-it-yourselfer.
