Easy Updates: Paint Your Ceiling Fan!

An old ceiling fan takes away from your home's total décor. A great option is to paint your ceiling fan. Using a foam brush application, repainting your ceiling fan is a pain-free method. You can buy the tool and paints needed at any store that specializes in home painting. The DIY ceiling paint project below lets you leave most of the fan in place, removing just the arms and blades.

How to Paint a Ceiling Fan
  • Cut off the circuit breaker to the fan. With a screwdriver, remove the blades, arms, and light fixtures from the ceiling fan. Clean all the parts of the ceiling fan with a multi-purpose spray cleaner. Dry all the pieces using a lint-free cloth.
  • Cover a stable work surface with a drop cloth and place the parts on it. Put one coat of metal primer on the screws, canopy, blade arms, and ceiling fan housing. Let the parts to completely dry.
  • Fill a little container with paint meant for metal. Apply a thin coat to the ceiling fan housing with a foam brush. Be sure to get the color into any vents or grooves, using the brush to even out any bumps. Let the first coat dry before applying two more thin layers until you get the hue you want.
  • Put two to three coats of the same paint to both sides of the ceiling fan arms. Allow each coat to dry before the next layer.
  • Reconnect the arms to the fan blades. Next, refasten the blades on the ceiling fan housing. Lastly, put back on the light fixture.

Ceiling Fan Painting Tips
  • Use a ladder that is high enough for you to see the top part of the fan housing.
  • Even though you can spray paint the arms outside, use the exact paint type and color you used on the ceiling fan housing to get the best results.
  • Usually, ceiling fan blades have another finish on one side. The finish might match your new paint job, reducing the work and time required.
  • Instead of painting the existing screw, purchase replacement screws in the finish of your choice.
