As a painting contractor in Rochester, NY, I frequently get asked when to sand and when not to sand pieces, when to prime and when not to prime, what type, satin paint or otherwise, to use on which surfaces, is, etc.

It is evident that folks still have a question about satin paint, as well as other paint types and when it is okay to use them. This blog article is all about what sort of paint to use on which surfaces.

Types Of Paint For Wood Surfaces
You can typically use any paint type on wood surfaces. It depends on what kind of finish (matte, gloss, etc.) you desire.

Oil-Based Paint
Oil-based paint is marvelous for furniture makeovers concerning stability over time. Though, it’s not as simple to handle as latex and other specialty furniture paints. With an oil-based paint, it is critical that you use a top-quality paint brush that crafted for oil-based paints.

One very crucial thing to know about oil-based paint is that it shouldn’t be painted right over latex paints. If you want to apply an oil-based paint over a latex painted surface, you have to sand it first and then use a water-based primer. Then and only then can you apply oil-based paint.

Latex Paint
Your typical latex paint is also okay to use on wood furniture. It’s much easier to use than oil-based paints. On the other hand, the longevity of latex paint isn’t as good.

If you use a gloss sheen or semi-gloss, you might not need a topcoat. It depends on how often the surface is used.

If your latex paint has a satin, eggshell, or flat sheen, you should use a top coat for additional protection. Soap and water are all you need to clean latex paint. Something to know about latex paint is that it is easy to see your brush strokes. To eliminate this issue, put in some floetrol.

Types Of Paint For Laminate Surfaces
Painting laminate surfaces is a whole other animal. It can be done, but it’s not that simple. To paint laminate surfaces, you first must use a primer. Always using a primer delivers impressive results.
