Tips for Getting Smooth Walls While Painting

6/26/2019

PictureSmoothing out a wall with sandpaper
If you want to paint the inside of your house, you might want to know what the secret is to getting smooth walls while painting just like a professional Rochester painter.
Read on to learn some of the most crucial secrets to having a smooth finish with interior painting.

Interior Painting Secrets

Sand away
It is critical to begin with a smooth surface if you want to get a smooth, flawless finish. Some paint contractors might tell you that a more precise description of their profession is a sander since they spend lots of time using sandpaper.

Use fine grain sandpaper to rub the walls down from the border up to the ceiling. Then sand vertically along the line of the ceiling and the skirting. When sanding wood before painting it, use a sanding sponge to clean out any crevices. Also, using a sanding machine will reduce the project time.

Tinted primer for vividness
Before applying paint coats, a pro painter will fill any cracks and holes. Painting right over these holes will leave a flat, dull finish. These spots will look drastically different from the rest of the wall. You can avoid this by priming the walls before paint applications.

You don’t have to use a white primer. You should use a color that’s close to the paint you are going to use. Tinted primer is more effective at covering your current wall color, making your finishing coat appear more vivid. This is mainly the case with colors like red or orange that usually require many coats.

Paint extender for no lap or brush marks
The secret to getting a finish that isn’t messed up thanks to lap and brush marks is to use a paint extender. The effects of this are two-fold. First, it reduces the paint’s drying time, giving you more room to overlay your just-painted sections without creating the dreadful lap marks that come up when you paint on dried paint.

Second, using paint extender will even out the paint. Those hideous brush marks aren’t even part of the picture. You are only left with smooth even color. If you are having issues getting your wall smooth, a local Rochester Painter can help you finish your project.
